Life's a beach

Updated: Jan 30, 2024

“Do you want to go to the beach? Yes! We have to have a shower first. I have to have a shower, you don’t have to have a shower.“ Waiting. Waiting.

Here we go again. She says we’re going to do something and then it takes her half an hour to get herself together. I suppose she’ll have to clean her teeth as well. There goes another five minutes of wait time. Then the car keys, the sun glasses, my lead, my harness, my water in the new pink water bottle which is really for her but she lets me drink from it because she doesn’t like water very much.

“We’re going to put your beach collar on because your ribbon collar always comes off in the water. Is that OK? No? You are so vain. You want to wear you ribbon because it is so stylish.” Yes, yes, whatever. Just get on with it.

And she puts me in the back seat of the car. Hmmmph. I sit in the front seat – not the driver’s seat because I don’t have a driver’s licence but I am sure I could drive as good as any human if you gave me a box to sit on.

Off we go. Heading west in the direction of the beach. Then we stop. She gets out of the car. Then she gets back in, as does the lady with the purple hair and funny accent. I like the lady with the purple hair and funny accent. She gives me big tickles. But I do object to her sitting in my seat. Why couldn’t she sit on the back seat?

We get to the beach. Cross the road. Down the steps. On to the sand. And I am beside myself (not literally but enough excitement for two of me). She takes off my lead and I run.

I run as fast as I can across the sand to the water. Oh, my lord, how good it feels. Only up to my tummy, mind you because I don’t like it if my paws can touch the sand.

The waves are very little and don’t make much sound so I can stay walking in the water.

Then I have a good look around to see who I can make friends with. There are lots of humans and lots of dogs to choose from. So many humans and dogs who have come to the beach in the hope of meeting me. So many dog bottoms to sniff. So many humans to tell me how gorgeous I am and pat and tickle me.

I don’t know where to run next. Dog, human, dog, dog, human. Back to lady with purple hair and funny accent and my human mum, just to remind them that I am the most important being on the beach. Then off to check out more dogs, more humans.

I am loving this. I am a very social creature. I like to make friends. Today I made lots of new best friends. Even though I will never see them again, I know I brought a smile to their face.
